Inside Out 269: When Your Parent Becomes Your Child
02.06.13 |
“The role reversal is real,” author Ken Abraham says in today’s Inside Out interview. “It hit me really powerfully that here I am, changing the diapers of the person who once changed my diaper.”
Dementia is changing family dynamics. While not everyone who ages declines into dementia, the numbers are increasing. Currently 5.4 million Americans are living with Alzheimer's disease—and Alzheimer’s is only one of several forms of the condition. In his book, When Your Parent Becomes Your Child, best-selling author Ken Abraham takes the reader through the final years of life with his mother, crafting both a tribute to Minnie Abraham and a primer on dementia for those beginning this journey with someone they love.
“The Bible says: ‘Honor your father and your mother,’” Ken reminds us. “I honestly believe there’s a blessing that goes along with that that I—not in a selfish way—but . . . I’m going to reap for the rest of my life because of caring for my mom. It’s a good investment. And it was a good investment for us, and I believe it will be a good investment for anybody else who takes that time to care for a loved one who has Alzheimer's or dementia or any other kind of disease or problem that they’re dealing with where their parent has become their child.”
