About half of the American population is single. That statistic, it turns out, is not reflected in the Evangelical church, where single people account for only about 25% of the people in the pews.

Why so few singles in church?

Inside Out guest Christine Colon thinks that the church’s attention on the nuclear family has alienated singles, who find it hard to relate to the marriage-inspired sermon illustrations, the family-focused church activities and the general silence on issues that go to the heart of the life of single adults.

So far I sound as if my conversation with Dr. Colon is negative. It is not. It is informative, yes, and very helpful. It celebrates God’s high regard for single as well as married people, His intentional re-creation of the family in the form of His church, and the beneficial way that His work can be accomplished as people--single and married--work together as they serve their communities.
