Singles Resource Team
Introducing Family Life's Singles Resource Team
Jim recently retired after serving with Family Life Ministries for 14 years as Director of Adult Ministries and Vice President of Operations. Prior to Family Life, he worked in various engineering and manufacturing positions for Corning Incorporated in Cleveland, OH and Corning, NY.
While in Ohio, Jim's first marriage ended in divorce. Out of this tragedy, Jim came to know Jesus Christ as his Savior and Lord and was led by God to minister to others going through similar experiences. That has resulted in Jim spending more than 30 years in ministries focusing on the needs of singles. Jim has helped to start three different single adult ministries in Ohio and New York and continues to serve on the leadership team of FLM's ministry to singles, which he helped to start in the late 1990's.
His desire is for single adults to realize their full potential in service to the Lord whether their singleness is for a season or a lifetime. Jim is remarried and has five children, aged 28 to 18 with his wife of 29 years, Cathy.
For many years, Cathy has worked alongside her husband, Jim, assisting him with divorce recovery work, including workshops and small group meetings in their home. She was one of the founding members of Family Life's SALSA singles ministry and has served on its leadership committee for over ten years, helping to plan and organize monthly events and an annual singles conference. Cathy is also a member of Family Life's newly formed Single Source ministry team which provides training and encouragement to those who desire to begin a singles ministry in their church or community. She has led Bible studies and served as a youth leader for teens and a Sunday school class leader for young adults at her church. Cathy has a passion to encourage and disciple all people, both young and old, to reach their full maturity in Christ.
Michelle was raised in church, had read her bible, and thought she was going to heaven. Yet on April 23, 1992, in the midst of difficulties, she "made a conscience decision to turn her will and life over to God as she understood Him". It was then that she heard the Lord speak to her for the first time. She heard, "Now we can get somewhere.... now we can do something!" She experienced being "born-again" and the incredible life of being a child of God and disciple of Jesus began. In June of 1993, she and her husband of nearly fifteen years separated, and in December 1994 they were legally divorced. Her boys were 11 and 12 when she became a single mom.
Her relationship with God as Father, Son & Holy Spirit continued, and continues to grow. Growing in the Lord; looking to be the woman God created; raising teen age boys; working; ministry opportunities. Challenging and difficult years, full and fun!
Twelve years after becoming single again, in December 2005, the Lord graced Michelle with a husband who loves God and his wife, in that order.
During thirteen years of her fifteen year career with the USPS, she was actively involved with their internal multilevel problem solving teams. As a District Trainer she was part of a team teaching problem solving skills, group dynamics & facilitating various monthly meetings throughout Western New York. The last three years, included being one of four Northeast Area Regional Trainers, "training the trainers". Her employment has also included two years as the Volunteer Coordinator for RSVP. Ministry leadership and personal group skills experience also includes: ten years on the SALSA leadership team; four years as the International Coordinator for the Elanja Children's Project benefiting children in South Africa; presenting Celebrate Recovery Training Workshops; as well as being a member of the Board of Deacons, and Church Moderator in her local church body.
With successes and disappointments, love and grace, she presses on to be all that God has created her to be and bring glory to His name!
Mark accepted Jesus as his personal Savior and Lord 24 years ago while living in New Hampshire. Mark continues to walk out his faith journey as a single. Mark has participated and lead several small groups and studies. He has been involved in leadership for singles ministries, SALSA, and his home church. Mark is passionate about seeing God transform the lives of singles through small groups and studies. He says, "small groups and studies are meant to be powerful” they can be a place to connect and grow in your relationship with God and others.
Debbie currently works in the Events Department at Family Life and part of her responsibility is to oversee the Single Source Ministry. But it's not just a responsibility, it's her passion. Her heart's desire is to see singles come to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ and become fully devoted Christ followers.
One of the reasons why she is so passionate about this ministry is her own personal testimony. When her marriage of 21 years ended in divorce, Debbie found herself searching for "someone" to fill the hole in her heart. Her search ended while attending her first Family Life event, a SALSA (singles) conference, where she encountered Christ for the first time.
Since that conference in January of 2000, Debbie has grown in her relationship with Jesus. She discovered how to use her God-given gifts and even her hurts to minister to other singles. She joined the leadership teams of two singles ministries (one of them Family Life's SALSA) and started a third singles ministry. As her passion for ministry grew, God made it clear that He was calling her to be a part of the Family Life team. After a year of raising personal support, Debbie took her leap of faith and joined the Family Life staff in July of 2006. Since then her hands and her heart have been involved in ministry to singles, singles leaders, seniors, volunteers and homeschoolers.
