Inside Out 6: Chuck Swindoll - Preach The Word
Chuck Swindoll: Preach The Word!
How can it be that Christians know less about the Bible and church history than atheists and agnostics?
That’s the sad word from a recent Pew Forum Survey.
We’ve got our Bibles.
Many of them.
But we don’t devour them.
A nibble here and there on a good day.
We’re starving in the midst of a buffet.
Matthew 4:4 (ESV)
But he answered, "It is written,” 'Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.' "
Truth is nourishing to the soul.
Truth be told however…. Truth has taken more than a few hits over the past few years at the hands of postmodernism.
Is the Bible really the inerrant, inspired word of God in all ways?
2 Timothy 3:16-17 (ESV)
All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness,
that the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work.
2 Peter 1:19-21 (ESV)
And we have something more sure, the prophetic word, to which you will do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts,
knowing this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture comes from someone's own interpretation.
For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.
Don’t we need to be more like the world to reach it?
1 John 2:15-17 (ESV)
“Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
For all that is in the world— the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride in possessions—is not from the Father but is from the world.
And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever.”
Philippians 2:15-16 (ESV)
” …that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world,
holding fast to the word of life, so that in the day of Christ I may be proud that I did not run in vain or labor in vain.”
Matthew 5:16 (ESV)
“In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.”
We’ve got to be relevant after all.
Isaiah 55:11 (ESV)
“… so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it.”
Many say if we focus too much on sin... repentance... and the reality of Hell we’ll scare folks away.
“To be right with God has often meant being in trouble with men.”-A.W. Tozer
Despite the warnings of many… the slow drift has been on for decades.
It’s like the old story of the frog sitting in a kettle on the stove.
There he sits.
In the water.
We turn up the heat ever so slightly... waiting for him to get used to it.
Then we kick it up a notch.
On and on it goes.
He’s being boiled alive and he doesn’t even know it.
This is serious stuff.
I wanted to connect with one of America’s best known pastors to get his take on all of this.
Check out my conversation with pastor, author, and Bible teacher on Insight for Living Chuck Swindoll.
Also, his new book is a great resource. It’s called The Church Awakening.
God help us to stand up for the truth in love…remembering that true love tells the whole truth.
