Inside Out 52: The Silent Seduction of Self-Talk
Studies show most us speak to ourselves at a rate of 1,300 words per minute, making constant assessments and judgments. It’s overwhelming isn’t it? Self-talk can make us or break us. And the truth is, as Christians we not only battle the sin that still clings to us relentlessly, we also have a very real enemy.
John 8:44 (ESV)
"(Satan) was a murderer from the beginning, and has nothing to do with the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies."
Satan does a pretty good job of floating lies our way as we think about incidents in the past. Ongoing struggles in the present and things that might happen in the future. In his book Spiritual Depression, Martyn Lloyd-Jones calls us as Christ followers to take action:
“We need to stop listening to ourselves so much and start talking to ourselves.”
Another way to put it: we need to preach to ourselves. Think biblically. Engage the internal dialogue with God’s truth.
2 Corinthians 10:5 (ESV)
"We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ."
This seems so hard to do sometimes. Most of the time. But the Holy Spirit can help us. Shelly Beach has been through many challenges in her life, and one day she discovered how her self-talk was destroying her from the inside out. She knows all about The Silent Seduction of Self-Talk. Her journey and what God taught her has helped so many people already.
You just might be the next one.
