Staycation: Penn Brad Oil Museum

09.02.16 | Traci Lynn Woolsey

At the Penn Bead Oil Museum in Custer City, PA, you can hear the “Wild Catting Tales” at the site of the 72 foot tall, 1890 Era Standard Rig…the first billion-dollar oil field. Guided tours are offered by oil country veterans. See yellow dogs and barkers, headache posts, hurry-up sticks and sucker rods, all used to produce the molecule of oil found in PA. In 1881, the Bradford Oil Field produced 83% of the United States total oil output; over 90,000 wells were drilled here. The museum is located in northwestern Pennsylvania in McKean County, south of Bradford.
