Inside Out: Resisting Porn

04.10.19 | Martha Manikas-Foster

Pornography's gone mainstream.

“About 40 million Americans are regular visitors to pornographic websites,” says Bernie Anderson. “That’s pretty significant. And the large majority of them are young adults, 18-24 years old. They seem to be the largest consumers of pornography.”

Anderson’s talking about the whole culture, but when it comes to Christians the stats on pornography use aren’t much different. He thinks Christians who use porn are often afraid of how their brothers and sisters in Christ will react, so they don’t risk seeking help. And that keeps them trapped.

“Sometimes faith communities can be places where pornography—pornography use, sexual addiction—can actually kind of fester and grow because there’s more shame involved,” he says.

Anderson gets that. For fifteen years while he was a pastor Anderson was addicted to pornography. He wrote about this in his book Breaking the Silence: A Pastor Goes Public about His Battle with Pornography.

Listen to my 20-minute conversation with Bernie Anderson about how pornography substitutes for authentic intimacy, hollows out a person, and hurts a user’s family. Anderson also shares what he considers the most important steps toward recovery: admit the habit and disclose it to a trusted friend, lean into community with others, and make porn difficult to access.
