Inside Out: Overwhelmed by the Most Wonderful Time of the Year?

10.25.17 | Martha Manikas-Foster

We work to resist it, but our stress escalates from Thanksgiving through Christmas.

Is it possible to enter this season overwhelmed by God instead of by our gift-giving, family gathering, re-create the traditions Holiday To-Do lists? My guest on this Inside Out podcast thinks so.

Hayley DiMarco’s newest book is “A Woman Overwhelmed: Finding God in the Messes of Life.” She believes we were designed to be overwhelmed, but not by our personal goals and checklists.

“Yes, you were made to overwhelmed—by God,” she says. “That’s where we’re getting it wrong. We’re missing it.”

In our 12-minute conversation, DiMarco encourages us to get to the point of looking at those To-Do Lists and asking, “Is this all really necessary?”

“Is God glorified if I get my list done? If at the end I’ve checked off everything, is God like, ‘Woo!’ He’s so glorified?” she asks. “Is that really the truth? Or, would He be more glorified if you said, ‘You know what? I’m not doing these. I am not washing the dishes tonight because my kids need me and I’m going to show them God’s grace and love and kindness?’”
