Inside Out: Holiday Grief

12.18.19 | Martha Manikas-Foster

These days around Christmas may be unhappy for you. That may be true for all the days between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day.

“We’ll greet each other and say, ‘Merry Christmas,’ but for many it’s a very difficult time, because it’s a reminder of what they’ve lost,” says pastor and counselor Jay LaScolea, director of Enrich Counseling headquartered in Big Flats, NY.

Maybe there’s a person missing from your celebrations, more distance from loved ones, or a job that you enjoyed that’s now over.

In our 15-minute conversation, LaScolea encourages us to go to God and be honest about the pain. He also counsels going to the people who love us, because there’s healing in community.

Listen to our conversation by choosing the LISTEN or DOWNLOAD option above. We talk about ways to address the pain if we feel holiday grief, as well as ways to help friends who feel unhappy this time of year.
