Inside Out: Get Talking: Dads and Daughters

08.25.20 | Martha Manikas-Foster

A father’s relationship with his daughter matters. It makes a difference in the way she sees herself and relates to others over her lifetime.

This can feel like a lot of pressure on a dad.

“Often men would rather do nothing than do it wrong,” says Dr. Michelle Watson Canfield, who works with girls and fathers and hosts the Dad Whisperer radio show and podcast out of Portland, Oregon. “There’s this pressure to do it right, and sometimes, when a man already has believed ‘the lie,’ I’ll call it—right? It’s not truth. It’s a lie that he’ll never get it right—he may stop trying.”

Watson Canfield’s new book “Let’s Talk: Conversation Starters for Dads and Daughters” aims to help fathers connect with their daughters by providing conversation scripts and ideas. We talk about the scripts and the father-daughter relationship in this 17-minute podcast.

“Dad, you have a powerful responsibility and opportunity—and I would even say privilege—to pursue your daughter’s heart, and in doing that you’re building a bridge to God as a father,” she says. “What a privilege.”
