Inside Out: Fathers and Daughters

06.05.19 | Martha Manikas-Foster

Soon it will be Father’s Day. For many it’s a day of wrapping paper, goofy socks, loud ties, and maybe a Sunday afternoon nap. But for others it’s a reminder of how much better a father’s relationship could have been with his children, especially with his daughters.

“A lot of dads that I interact with, they really are troubled when they know that things aren’t going well,” says today’s guest, Dr. Michelle Watson. Watson’s a licensed counselor who specializes in working with daughters and fathers. She hosts the Portland, Oregon radio program and podcast “The Dad Whisperer.”

“We want our dads to be proud of us,” she says. “We want them to affirm who we are. We don’t want to be a mess up.”

Watson works with daughters and fathers through her counseling practice and The Abba Project that she founded. In addition to her broadcasting work, she has written the book Dad, Here’s What I Really Need from You: A Guide for Connecting with Your Daughter’s Heart

Watson says there are amazing ripple effects in a girl’s life when she feels close with her Dad.  But because daughters discover a lot of who they are through their relationship with their fathers, when the relationship is bad—or doesn’t exist—the ripple effects are different.

“She’s longing to know that she’s beautiful, that she’s enough, that she’s worthy, and on it goes,” Watson says. “And if she doesn’t hear those things from Dad, I really believe she’ll remain in a lost place while she’s looking for it somewhere else.”
