Inside Out: A Better Way for Graduates

07.03.19 | Martha Manikas-Foster

If you sat in the bleachers this graduation season, your ears may still ring with the charge to graduates to “do what you love, and you’ll never work a day in your life,” or “let your passion be your guide;” or “follow your heart.”

It’s inspiring. But what if the best advice for graduates actually isn’t to “follow your heart”?

“I think it’s helpful for us as graduates and/or mentors to graduates and parents to know what the Bible says,” says award-winning journalist and author Patricia Raybon. “Then we don’t get confused and continue to share this advice that really, the Bible is cautioning us against.”

Raybon’s recent Christianity Today opinion piece is titled “Why ‘Follow Your Passions’ is Bad Advice for Graduates.”

Raybon doesn’t doubt that God wants us to succeed. “But the heart is the wrong guide to get us there,” she says.

“My life,” Raybon says in our conversation, “would have been a lot different in many ways around many decisions if I had taken time--and it takes, I would say, courage and great willingness--to say to the Lord, ‘Search me, please. I do not want to be wrong. I don’t want to be wrong by you.’”
