Inside Out 95: Parenting Your Adult Child

Book Cover: Secrets to Parenting Your Adult ChildParenting doesn't stop when the children grow up, and the nest doesn't always empty when, or how, parents thought it would.   The role changes but the sense of responsibility continues.

My conversation with licensed counselor and Christ follower, Nancy Williams, draws from her professional and personal experience.

The goal?  To encourage us in our pursuit of healthy relationships with our adult children.

Her insight, encouragement, and advice makes sense as we navigate everything from prolonged adolescence and boundary struggles to disappointing choices our children make.

This is truth; that is road tested, kid approved, and good for our spiritual health.

Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth.  Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, and endures all things.”

(1 Corinthians 13:4-7)

What a wonderful program. Both of my adult children have moved in and out of our home with their families. I am living for the Lord now but I had backslid and it caused many griefs for our family. We allowed both of them here with a partner that they were not married to - before this point we never would have let this happen. Please take it from some one who is in her late 50's that all the advice given in this program was given with much prayer and thought and making mistakes in this area can and will cause great grief for your whole family - its a ripple effect. I have put both of my children in the Lord's hands now and I love them dearly (they are 35 & 37) They are both far from the Lord and although my husband gave them and their significant others almost every cent of financial help that we could and loved them the best that we knew how neither are talking to me now. They were very ungrateful and I know Satan used this time to somehow put a wedge between my son, daughter, and I. It is too long of a story to tell all, but I guess I just wanted to say that if you have had the priviledge to hear all this advice about your adult children please accept it all with an open heart and mind. It is the best advice I have ever heard. We now have a long road back to where we were 4 or 5 years ago. God is working but it is a very difficult road. Love your children with all your heart and soul and pray a hedge of protection around them daily. Time is short and it is a spiritual battle. Satan knows the end is near and he is working even harder to get our children. I thank the Lord Jesus for his wonderful grace and mercy that endures forever.
