Inside Out 55: "Lord, Save Me from Myself"

02.25.11 | Kurt Goff

“Lord, save me from myself.”-Brian Welch

Psalm 130:1-5 (ESV)
"Out of the depths I cry to you, O Lord!  O Lord, hear my voice! Let your ears be attentive to the voice of my pleas for mercy!  If you, O Lord, should mark iniquities, O Lord, who could stand?  But with you there is forgiveness, that you may be feared."

Brian “Head” Welch was rich and famous beyond imagination. In the world of heavy metal rock his band Korn was it and on top of the world. But with the world at his feet, he realized there was a dear price to pay.

You can’t imagine the depth of Brian’s despair as he rode the dark roller coaster ride of sex, drugs, and rock n’ roll. He was locking himself in a coffin of his own making. Who cares if it was lined with gold?

Matthew 16:26 (NLT)
And how do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose your own soul in the process? Is anything worth more than your soul?”

The most unlikely guy ever to come to Jesus Christ and embrace him as his Savior? Maybe. But the truth is we need as much grace as Brian does. Every day, every moment of our lives.

In the podcast you’ll learn about:

  • His rough childhood filled with bullying
  • A friend’s Mom who first told him about Jesus when he was a child
  • How his 5 year old daughter singing a Korn song was an appointment from God
  • The desperation he felt to break the drug and alcohol abuse that was killing him
  • Walking away from a $25 million contract and leaving the band completely, forever.
  • How God showed up in truly amazing ways, including at his baptism in the Jordan River in Israel. (You don’t want to miss this!)
  • ...and so much more.

This podcast is a good listen for teens on up. And the really neat thing: Even though he came to Christ several years ago his passion for the Lord is still on high octane. A natural high, you ask? Absolutely!

If you’re in the Jamestown, New York area, he’s going to be speaking at a fundraiser this weekend (Sunday, February 27th) at The Crown Theatre. 4pm is the time and tickets are $10 before Sunday and $12 the day of the event. For more info on the event: (716) 573-6539. All of the proceeds will benefit three local ministries that focus on helping people with drug and alcohol abuse issues as well as various other struggles.

Brian's story was inspiring to me and I bought his book a year or two ago. I couldn't put it down. I also have his album. I love his inspiring music of how he kicked his addictions and came to know god. (Even though I'm not a nu-metal lover, I was hooked to Brian's story and his music)

Used to love Korn, his prior band, when he was unsaved (when I was unsaved). I questioned when I ferst heard about his acceptance of Jesus Christ as his personal Lord & Savior over 2 years ago. When I heard & read about his testimony, I could only give glory & honor to the Most High King. Only He could do something as wonderful as this! And yes, the same drive & sound was pulled from Korn & blessed with a new motive in his new band!

I had the privilege to serve as security for this event and you can take it from me... Brian Welch is the REAL DEAL!! I stood outside his dressing room along with another Brother in Christ who also served as security, and "Head" was talking to us about the awesomeness of God, and you could feel his sincerity! Many were saved during this event and many more will be in the future as Brian "Head" Welch brings his story of God's mercy and grace to audiences around the world!
