Inside Out 296: What Millennials Want

11.20.13 | Martha Manikas-Foster

Dorothy Greco loves the church. She’s concerned, though, that the years of tinkering intended to woo the current generation of young adults has actually missed the demographic entirely. Greco--a journalist, pastor, and photographer—has written a Christianity Today her.meneutics blog post titled, “How the Seeker-Sensitive, Consumer Church is Failing a Generation.” She joins us for this Inside Out conversation about what Millennials want and how all Christians might benefit from this generation’s vision of living out the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

To be clear, generalizations have limitations; not everyone between 13 and 33 is avoiding the church. Still, as Greco points out, by and large we’re talking about altruistic young adults, people truly concerned about those with less. If they are attracted to Jesus and they walk into our churches, they are looking for a community where people want to live out the Gospel all week long. These are connected, empowered people who want deep relationships. They care about social justice, are aware of what is going on in the world, and want to take action to make things better.

You don’t have to be a young adult to find this vision compelling. Who wouldn’t want to be part of a community where the hungry are fed, the homeless are integrated into community life, and even the demanding portions of Scripture are taken seriously?
