Inside Out- Parents of Children with Special Needs

04.22.15 | Martha Manikas-Foster

Parents need creativity, flexibility, and stamina--among other things. If your child has special needs, you need more. More stamina, yes, but also more support. More encouragement. And maybe more good ideas for how to care for yourself. Because for you, it’s likely that the care giving years will last longer than you imagined at the start of this journey.

That’s where Laurie Wallin comes in--or at least one of the places she comes in. Among her four children are two with special needs, and her new book, Get Your Joy Back, is aimed to help parents live with joy, no matter what life brings.

“We’re in a marathon,” she says in our recorded interview. “Nobody who’s running a marathon is going to get on somebody else who’s running a marathon for taking that cup of water at the pit stop. They’re actually going to say, ‘Hey, Dude, you missed the pit stop. Get back there. Get that water, you know?’ So we have to get those little cups of water as we go. It’s a long run.”

If you’re the parent of a child who needs extra, this conversation is for you. We talk about guilt. We talk about resentment. And we talk about how God sees beyond all the roles you play, and into the core of who you are. And He values you. “You’re still there,” Wallin says, “and you’re still worth it.”

If you love a family that lives with the challenge, this conversation is also for you. By listening, you might learn how to make their lives a little easier.

But let’s just say you don’t fit into either category. Then allow me to suggest that you listen just for the delight of hearing what Wallin has to say.
