The Way Judges Are Elected Could Be Changing In Pennsylvania

Wednesday, a legislative panel approved a proposal that would amend the Pennsylvania Constitution to elect state appeals court judges by geography. The effort was motivated by Republicans' anger over recent rulings from the Democratic-leaning state Supreme Court.

Of the five Democrats on that state court, one is from the Philadelphia area while the rest are from the Pittsburgh region.

Supporters of the reform effort say there are very few judges in Pennsylvania who hail from rural, more conservative areas.
