The Pottsgrove School District Bans Prayer During Graduation

06.02.16 | Bob Price

The Pennsylvania public high school is ending its long tradition of offering a prayer during its graduation ceremony on June 15th.

Its because there was a complaint after a student last year invoked the name of Jesus during the benediction.

The superintendent says she was taken aback by the prayer's decidedly "Christian" tone.

The Pottsgrove school attorney says a court ruling 15 years ago in California makes prayers at graduation illegal.

The Christian law firm Alliance Defending Freedom says there is judicial precedent affirming the rights of students to pray at public school events.

There will be a public meeting to discuss the issue June 7th at 7:30 p.m. at the high school.
