The gas tax hike has been phased in as part of a 2013 state law to improve roadways.

Pennsylvania already imposes the nation's highest gas tax.

Come January 1st, he price will go up about 8 cents per gallon. Drivers will be paying about 76 cents-a-gallon in state and federal taxes.

The average price of gas in Pennsylvania is $2.41 a gallon.

The price hike is part of a plan that was passed under former governor Tom Corbett.  It was designed to raise billions of dollars to upgrade bridges and highways across the Keystone State.
