New Bill Aims To Protect Police From Attacks

In response to recent violence against police officers, state Representative Frank Burns introduced the “Blue Lives Matter,” bill but opponents say it’s a law that just isn’t necessary.

Under Pennsylvania law, an assault targeted at people based on race, color, religion or national origin is considered a hate crime.

House Bill 2261 would add another group to that list: law enforcement officers.

In a statement, Burns (D-Cambria) says “law enforcement officials have been singled out for attacks across the country just because they wear the uniform.”

He cites the recent attack in Dallas, where five officers were killed, as one of the reasons for introducing the bill.

In May, a similar bill was signed into law in Louisiana.
