Gov Cuomo Signs Legislation That Decriminalizes Marijuana In Ny State

07.29.19 | Bill Price

One of the hot-button issues in Albany this past legislative session has been put to bed with the stroke of the governor's pen.

The legislation reduces unlawful possession of marijuana to a violation punishable by fine, and creates a process for individuals convicted of certain marijuana offenses to have their records expunged.

At today's bill-signing ceremony, the governor announced that communities of color have been disproportionately impacted by laws governing marijuana for far too long, and today he's ending this injustice once and for all.

The bill will take effect in 30 days.
