A Monroe County Sheriff's deputy on routine patrol in Mendon is credited with saving a family from a fire.

The deputy noticed flames coming from the garage of a home on Clover Street around 1 a.m. Friday, and immediately requested the fire department.

In the meantime, he safely evacuated two adults and five children that were in the home at the time.

Fire crews say a chicken coop caught fire, and spread to the garage.

The cause is under investigation.
