PluggedIn.gifPlugged In reviews movies, music, general media, and pop cultural issues from a conservative Christian perspective. A counterpart to magazines such as Entertainment Weekly and Teen People; plugged in reviews focused on evaluating the morals of movies as well as their artistic value. My husband and I saw True Grit over Christmas break and found the movie annoying and disappointing. We fell in love with the tenacious heroine, but most the characters she encountered were either unnecessary or out-of-character. Examples: The dentist scene lasted far too long and appeared to be an attempt and humor. The spanking given by the Texas Ranger was silly and only made the the character seem like a buffoon. The gangsters sudden ability to speak in perfect (and downright elegant) prose at the end of the movie was quite out of character.
And finally, (SPOILER) our beloved 14-year-old go-getter grows into a lonely and apparently miserable old maid who is somewhat feared by the locals. What's up with that? Why didn't she become an attorney or an officer of the law? Either would have fit her character beautifully. If the writers didn't think a woman could be either in that time period, why couldn't she have married someone in either field? BTW: Did she ever make it home? Did she ever get another horse?
And what about our allegedly dim witted Texas Ranger? Is he still waiting for someone to send him help on the ridge? Did he ever get a reward? What's he up to now?
My husband and I were left with oodles of unanswered questions after watching True Grit - not the type that made us want to delve deeper into the characters, but instead those that made us wonder what in the world the writer's were thinking. You'll need a lot of "true grit" to get through this flick.

Oops - no apostrophe needed in "writers" in the last sentence. I wonder how many other typos you can find. Pretend it's a game.
