Inside Out 235: Pray for the Johns
The average age that a prostitute begins work is between 12 and 13. Deceit, coercion and violence are required to provide most of the prostitutes offered to paying customers; pimps and slave traders find it worth the effort because of the payoff. Demand drives the industry—and that it what it is, an industry.
But what if the demand dried up? What if those who hired prostitutes and purchased pornography stopped? What if their lives were so changed, and the drop off in demand was so severe, that it was no longer financially lucrative to sexually exploit men, women and children?
Author and blogger Anna Broadway is praying for exactly this outcome---and she’s asking us to join her. In fact, she’s designated two specific days to pray for the johns who hire prostitutes: Sunday, February 12, and Tuesday, February 14, 2012.
(Perhaps the advertisements for Valentine’s Day chocolate hearts and floral bouquets will help us remember those trapped in the corruption of love.)
I don’t mean to be heavy-handed. Some people might not have thought through the consequences of paying for sex, while others may be grieving the consequences but feel trapped. Anna asks that in addition to praying for johns to repent, those who have not found this a temptation should pray for their own hearts—that they be open to providing an atmosphere that welcomes the confession of others. Self-righteousness has its own consequences.
Please listen to what Anna has to say. Pray, and ask your church to pray.
