FLN News / Building a Library
06.29.10 |
Elizabeth Spencer is a Christian peace-corps volunteer living and working in the Dominican Republic. Her family lives in Corning and Bath -- right here in the Twin Tiers.
She was in the D.R. when the earthquake in next-door Haiti hit. She has learned to speak fluent Spanish... has lived in a 2-room hut on a mountain with no running water and sporadic electricity for 20 months... and sleeps with tarantulas jumping on her mosquito net... all in the hopes of working with children and improving their literacy rate.
She's working on a project right now to build a library in a small town outside the Dominican city of Navaratte and tells FLN's Sarah Harnisch what it's like to be a Christian in a country that doesn't speak English... one of the poorest countries in the world.

Elizabeth said that she will be home in the mid July. We would like to donate some books for Elizabeth to take back with her. My children do a reading club over the summer and we are big in to reading. We would love to help her out. I just need info on how to do that.... When I heard the story I knew i needed to help her with her dream of building a library...

Thank you so much, Bobbi Jo! You can drop the books off at Family Life in Bath, or you can mail them to FLN by July 15th at: P.O. Box 506, Bath, NY, 14810.
She is also is desperate need of donations-- so if you know anyone who may be willing to donate even a few dollars, there's a link to the story above where you can do that online. I spoke with Elizabeth yesterday and she said they're almost at a stopping point on what they're able to do because their funds are so low.
For anyone wishing to donate books, she can take either Spanish or English books-- but if the books are in English, she requests books that are 3rd grade reading level or below.
Thank you for your generous hearts! I know these people will be blessed.
