WALT Day
12.15.11 |
Hornell author and mom of 3 Becky DePra has taken on a crusade to save the jobs of postal workers. She wants every one to sit down and write a letter to boost mail volume. It's called W.A.L.T. Day. Her group of 10 kids has already written 200 letters.

I'm the pastor of a small rural church, Bishopville United Methodist, only about a mile from where Becky lives. Interestingly, we've e-mailed each other, and now I've heard her voice, but we've yet to talk or meet! Well, I did once open a door (literally) for her, although she doesn't know that, & at the time I did it, I didn't know it was her!
I'm interested in this topic for at least 2 reasons. My Dad, Howard Kelly, 86, of Perry NY, has been retired from the postal service for very nearly 30 years, after having been credited with 30 years of service as a postal worker. I say "credited with," because his time serving our country in the U.S. Navy at the end of World War II was added onto his time as a postal worker.
Secondly, for the last few months I've been struggling to convert a group of 6-8 persons who meet for prayer and Bible study weekly into a "Holistic Small Group," which is supposed to have 5 components: worship, discipleship, fellowship, evangelism, and ministry. This is modeled on the Great Commandment & the Great Commission, and is set forth in Rick Warren's Purpose Driven Church/Life books. My struggle has been to add the evangelism & ministry components to our group, which regularly includes the worship, discipleship, and fellowship components in at least some fashion.
I now believe that my struggle may be over - that adding a regular W.A.L.T. day to what our group does will accomplish several things at once:
1) the recipients of the letters will be blessed, and possibly evangelized
2) the writers of the letters will be blessed
3) the postal workers may benefit
4) our Bishopville group will at last become a "Holistic Small Group," regularly accomplishing the above-mentioned 5 components.
I'm psyched!
A big thanks to you, Becky, and a thanks also to you, Sarah.
And a further aside to you, Becky. If I need your help, I know where you live. And my Dad, God willing, will be in Vero Beach, FL until May 2012.
