TLI: Teachers Unions in Retreat

07.26.12 | Cecil Van Houten

There are changes happening in one of the largest teachers unions in the country.  The National Education Association, faced with declining membership and diminished revenues, is shifting its focus from being a powerful national lobbying group to more of an education-oriented local partner in education. Ironically, the problems the NEA is facing have been largely caused by their own unwillingness to work cooperatively with local school districts, resulting in financial cutbacks and teacher layoffs.  There is reason for cautious optimism that the union is finally “getting the message” and seeking to work with school administrators rather than pursuing its own agenda.  www.teachingandlearninginstitute.org and www.fln.org/media.
