Inside Out 60: The Obedience Option
"For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I keep on doing. Now if I do what I do not want, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me. So I find it to be a law that when I want to do right, evil lies close at hand.
For I delight in the law of God, in my inner being, but I see in my members another law waging war against the law of my mind and making me captive to the law of sin that dwells in my members. Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death? Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, I myself serve the law of God with my mind, but with my flesh I serve the law of sin.” (Romans 7:19-25)
I find comfort in knowing that even the great Apostle Paul struggled with obeying God, but it doesn’t make me any less discouraged with my own one step forward two steps back kind of life. I know perfection isn’t for this life, but I also know that I’m called to pursue holiness. And God is pleased in the pursuit, because what he calls me to is what I want to be even it’s not what I am today. But it’s daily fight and I thank God for it. It’s a sign that the Holy Spirit is at work in me:
"For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do." (Galatians 5:17)
“The Christian is known by his peace without as well as his fight within.” - J.C. Ryle
I have peace with God because Jesus took the punishment for my sins on the cross and rose from the grave. I show my gratitude in the pursuit of obedience:
"If you love me, you will keep my commandments.” (John 14:15)
I know all this but it’s the practical living it out that’s tough. I need handles for the heavy lifting. Enter Pastor David Hegg. He reminded me that choosing God’s way is all about faith. All about a passion for the way that is far better than anything I can possibly imagine.
It’s called The Obedience Option. And it works!
