Inside Out 18: Hope Unseen

11.11.10 | Kurt Goff

io-hope-unseenScotty Smiley accepted Jesus Christ as his Savior as a very young child. In fact, he can’t ever remember a time when the Bible wasn’t a part of his life.

He grew up believing in a God who loved and protected him.

He married a Christian girl.

He graduated from West Point.

He survived Ranger School and headed to Iraq to serve our country.

And then on April 6, 2005, a suicide bomber blew Captain Smiley’s world apart.

The attack left him blind.

Could his faith really survive this tragic event?

“Lord is it really your plan to leave me a pathetic version of my former self?”

What do you do when God shatters your world to the core?

When God doesn’t live up to your expectations?

As Scotty told me, you have a choice:

“Do you believe God is who He says he is….or will you turn your back on Him?”

Take in some deep truths hammered out in the life of the U.S. Army’s first blind active-duty officer.

The words of our conversation are still ringing in my ears.

Mark 4:23 (ESV)
"If anyone has ears to hear, let him hear."
