Zimbabwe has a new prime minister. Opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai was sworn in today as part of a power-sharing deal with President Robert Mugabe. Mugabe administered the oath of office at a ceremony in the capital city of Harare.

Last year, the 56-year-old Tsvangirai won a first round presidential poll against Mugabe. However, electoral violence prompted him to boycott a subsequent runoff. Zimbabweans hope the new power sharing agreement will bring the African nation back from the brink of a possible political meltdown.

Zimbabwe has been hit particularly hard in the global economic crisis, suffering hyperinflation, food shortages and an unemployment rate above 90 percent. A cholera epidemic has killed over three-thousand people in about six months.
