Ymca Shortening Name To The Y

The YMCA is shortening its name.  "The New York Times" reports that the non-profit is re-branding itself to go with the abbreviation everyone uses anyway.  Spokewoman Kate Coleman said calling the organization "the Y" would make it seem, quote, "warmer, more genuine, more welcoming."

The Y's name-change follows similar moves by National Public Radio, which now goes solely by NPR, and fast-food chain KFC, which was once known as Kentucy Fried Chicken.  The Y began life 166 years ago in England as the Young Men's Christian Association.
