Women Set To Outnumber Men In Workforce

Women are poised to become a majority in the workplace. "USA Today" reports that if trends hold steady, females will outnumber males at work by October or November. The most recent numbers from the Bureau of Labor Statistics show women held almost 50-percent of the 132 million jobs in the nation in June. One explanation behind the trend is that the economic recession has hit traditionally male dominated jobs in the construction and manufacturing sectors hard. Professions such as health care, education and government have grown. Those sectors have historically hired more women.

The growing number of women doesn't mean equality across the board. Labor economist Heidi Hartmann of the Institute for Women's Policy Research says women still earn 77-percent of what men make, while men still dominate in the ranks of executives.
