Wild Day In Group H South Africa Loses
06.17.10 |
Second-ranked Spain was a surprise loser Wednesday on Day Six of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. The Spaniards fell to 24th-ranked Switzerland 1-nil in the first contest for both teams in this year's tournament. It was the first-ever win in 19 tries for the Swiss against Spain. In Wednesday's other Group H contest, Chile won its first World Cup match in 48 years by defeating Honduras 1-nil. The last time the Chileans won in soccer's premier tournament was in the third-place game against Yugoslavia of the 1962 World Cup. Host nation South Africa fell to Uruguay 3-nil in the day's final contest. Uruguay's second goal came on a penalty kick on a play that also saw South Africa's top goalie ejected on a red card foul.
Thursday's action will see Group A favorites France and Mexico face off against each other. Mexico opened with a 1-all draw with South Africa, while France and Uruguay went scoreless last Friday. The other games of the day will take place in Group B, where Argentina will take on South Korea and Greece goes up against Nigeria. South Korea leads the group through the first round of games with a two-goal win over Greece.
