The widow of a 9/11 victim is believed to have died in the crash last night of Continental flight 3047 in Clarence. Beverly Eckert was traveling to Buffalo for what would have been her husband's 58th birthday. She also had planned to participate in a scholarship award at a local high school that was established in honor of her former husband, 9-11 victim Sean Rooney.
There were no survivors among the 48 passengers on board the commuter plane that hit a house, killing one person inside. The 49 deaths make last night's crash the most deadly in the U.S. since a Comair commuter jet went down in Lexington, Kentucky in August of 2006.
Two people in the house struck by the plan escaped. They have been identified as 57-year-old Karen Wielinski and her daughter, 22-year-old Jill. The pair were taken to Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital where they are reportedly in stable condition. A third person in the house died and has not yet been identified.
Meanwhile, a National Transportation Safety Board team at the site to conducts its investigation. The agency says Lorenda Ward will head the investigation. She was also involved in the probe of the Fall 2007 crash in Manhattan, New York that claimed the life of New York Yankees pitcher Corey Lidle.
