Wave Of Extra Troops In East Afghanistan

The first of about 30 thousand more troops planned for Afghanistan have arrived in two key provinces of that country. Military officials say the troops from the 3rd Brigade of the 10th Mountain Division arrived in Logar and Wardak provinces to reinforce an existing deployment of the 101st Airborne. The military says the brigade is the first of its size to deploy exclusively into the two provinces, and increases the U.S. presence there by thousands.

The U.S. has pledged between 20 thousand and 30 thousand additional troops for Afghanistan. Violence there has increased dramatically since Taliban-led insurgents regrouped in 2005.

President Obama is expected to approve the remaining troop increase, which has been in the planning stages since last year.  He has pledged to make Afghanistan
the cornerstone of his foreign policy.
