The U.S. Senate has passed a resolution apologizing for slavery. The Senate issued the formal apology yesterday after a resolution co-sponsored by Iowa Senator Tom Harkin, who said the apology was long overdue.

Iowa Civil Rights Commission executive director Ralph Rosenberg says the apology is important. The measure is expected to go to the House next week.

The resolution was co-offered by Kansas Republican Sam Brownback. Juneteenth celebrations marking the emancipation of slaves are taking place across the nation today.
