In New York, the shrinking field of challengers for Senator Kirsten Gillibrand now includes Republicans. Long Island Congressman Peter King says he won't take on New York's junior senator next fall and run for re-election in his Seaford district. He is seeking a tenth term. In a statement, King said he had previously hoped to run for the U.S. Senate, but would have preferred to run against Caroline Kennedy, who New York Governor David Paterson had once considered for the seat before he appointed Gillibrand to replace now-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. King says Gillibrand generates neither strong support nor opposition, making it nearly impossible for him to raise the campaign funds he would need to run a successful campaign for the U.S. Senate. Former New York Governor George Pataki is considered a likely Republican opponent next year for Gillibrand.
