U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Kurt Campbell met with detained Myanmar opposition leader and Nobel Peace Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi [[ ang sun soo chee ]] on Wednesday. Campbell also met with senior members of the regime, including Prime Minister Thein Sein [[ TAYN SAYN ]] during the trip. The high-level delegation is part of the Obama administration's ongoing efforts to reach out to the military junta in the nation also known as Burma. The talks are a follow-up to discussions last month in New York. Campbell's visit is the highest-level American contact with the regime since Madeleine Albright visited in 1995. Campbell is expected to push for the Burmese government to hold fair elections next year. The two-day visit has been described as a "fact-finding mission" for the U.S. Myanmar's vested interest lies in the West possibly lifting its crippling trade embargo.
