Upstate Ny Congressional Race Enters Final Stretch
03.27.09 |
The final debate was held last night in the hotly contested race to fill Kirsten Gillibrand's House seat. Polls out this week before next Tuesday's election indicate the race is a toss-up between state Assembly Minority Leader James Tedisco and Democratic businessman Scott Murphy.
The Murphy campaign is airing a new campaign ad featuring Vice President Joe Biden. New York's new junior senator is expected to stump with Murphy this weekend. Both the Democratic and Republican national committees are pouring thousands of dollars into the special election race in a district, which has been considered a Republican stronghold for decades.
Murphy's campaign for Congress has focused on his support for President Obama's economic policies. The president returned the favor when he recently endorsed Murphy. In a prepared statement, the president said Murphy has shown he is willing to take a stand by supporting the massive economic stimulus bill.
Meanwhile, Murphy and his supporters might be growling over Jim Tedisco's recent endorsement. The Republican was endorsed Wednesday by the U.S. Humane Society. One of Tedisco's legislative accomplishments was the enactment of Buster's Law, which created the category of aggravated cruelty to animals.
