The U.N. Security Council has passed a resolution urging an "immediate, durable and fully respected ceasefire" between Israel and Hamas Thursday. The United States abstained, citing the ongoing talks between Egypt and both warring parties.

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said the Bush administration backed the text but, quote, "thought it important to see the outcomes of the Egyptian mediation efforts." The resolution called for Israel's immediate withdrawal from Gaza and for arrangements to prevent Hamas from smuggling arms so the border can be re-opened.
