The United States is partnering with the U.N. to an effort to elminate HIV among infants by 2015. The goal of the project "Countdown to Zero" is to treat 15 million HIV-positive women in the hope of decreasing the infection of newborns. It is hoped that the plan will allow all women as well as their children to receive life-saving HIV prevention and treatment services. Executive director of UNAIDS, Michael Sidibe said, "We believe that by 2015, children everywhere can be born free of HIV and their mothers can remain healthy."
Currently, a baby is born with HIV every minute.
