Today Is The Great American Smokeout
11.19.09 |
No butts about it, today's the Great American Smokeout. It's the 34th year in a row that the American Cancer Society's urged nicotine fiends to give up their smokes for a single day. The idea is to encourage smokers to eventually give up their deadly habit for good. The American Cancer Society offers help on its webpage at www.cancer.org and its toll-free number for help quitting smoking is 1-800-ACS-2345. The group says tobacco remains the number one preventable cause of disease and premature death in the U.S. Thirty percent of all cancer deaths, including 87 percent of lung cancer deaths, are caused by smoking.
