Today marks one year since US Airways flight 1549 splash landed in New York's Hudson River. Captain Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger safely guided the plane into the water after it struck a flock of birds shortly after taking off from LaGuardia Airport en route to North Carolina. His actions saved the lives of 155 people on board the jet. Passengers stood on the wings of the plane as it floated in the icy waters awaiting rescue from ferry boats on the Hudson. After losing power in the engines, Sullenberger told air traffic controllers he would not have enough power to turn around to LaGuardia or to land at an airport in New Jersey. He added, quote, "We're gonna be in the Hudson." Sullenberger and first officer Jeff Skiles walked through the fuselage to make sure all passengers had made it out of the plane and onto the wings safely before they exited as the water rose. The crew received numerous honors afterward, including being invited to Super Bowl 43 and an invitation for Sullenberger to the inauguration just days later of President Obama.
