Three Mile Island Reactor Breaks World Record

The Three Mile Island nuclear power plant near Harrisburg, Pennsylvania broke a world record yesterday. The Generating Station Unit 1 was shut down for refueling and maintenance in Dauphin County, marking the first time the pressurized water reactor had been out of operation in 705 days. A Maryland nuclear power plant previously held the record at 692 days.

Despite breaking a world record, Three Mile Island is still best known for the 1979 partial core meltdown of Unit 2. The result was the worst accident in the U.S. in the commercial nuclear power generating industry's history.
