(Singapore) -- A policy research group is providing a frightening picture of the growing Taliban threat in Afghanistan.  A security map from the International Council on Security and Development shows substantial Taliban insurgent activity nearly everywhere in the war-torn country.

The biggest change from previous security assessments is in certain northern provinces like Kunduz that were once considered relatively safe.  An ICOS analyst said insurgent attacks have increased dramatically across northern Afghanistan.

Record military and civilian deaths in recent months in Afghanistan have tested the resolve of both U.S. and European leaders.  Making the situation worse is political uncertainty following the Afghan presidential election in late August.

A UN-backed election watchdog has ordered a partial vote recount amid widespread accusations of fraud aimed at the Afghan president's camp.
