A newly released survey says of all the people in the industrialized world the French spend the most time sleeping. The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development poll discovered the average French citizen sleeps nearly nine hours every night. That is over an hour longer than the typical Japanese and Koreans who sleep the least of all the 18 nationalities polled.

The survey says Americans sleep more than 8.5 hours per day. That figure is not even close to a National Sleep Foundation poll that found in March of last year the average American was reporting six hours and 40 minutes of sleep each weeknight.

The poll also asked people from various nations about their eating habits. They found the French also top that list. At 2 hours per day they spend more time consuming food and drink than any other nationality. The Japanese are close on their heels. In spite of long commutes and working days, they put nearly 2 hours into satisfying their hunger.

The food consumption figures for Americans were not collected for this poll but another survey by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics found last year that the average American spent 1.1 hours each day eating and drinking.
