Taking zinc supplements can lessen the impact and the length of the common cold.  A study concludes persons with colds taking zinc feel better in seven days compared to those taking a placebo.  The research also finds children taking zinc for at least five months have fewer colds and less school absences.

A lead author of the study says the data supports evidence for using zinc as a cold treatment.  The common cold is cited as one of the most widespread illnesses and is the leading cause of missed days at work and school.
