A study commissioned by Penn State has found the university generates $17 billion every year for Pennsylvania. The report released Wednesday says it makes Penn State the largest single contributor to the state economy. The university is also the biggest creator of non-government jobs, with 44,000 employees.

Half of the money is said to go straight back into the Pennsylvania economy, and the other half goes to business services, research and alumni activities. School president Graham Spanier says while the study was not solely done to get funding from the government, he hopes the results will help state residents and elected officials understand how much the university system means to Pennsylvania.
