Study Binge Drinking Common Among Older People

Binge drinking is not just a issue with college students any more.  A newly-released study conducted by Duke University researchers shows 22-percent of men and nine-percent of women ages 50 to 64 engages in binge drinking.  Binge drinking is defined as having five or more drinks at one time.

The study also shows that 19-percent of men and 13-percent of women in the same age group have two or more drinks a day.  For people over 65, 14-percent of men and three-percent of women engage in binge drinking.

The study was based on eleven-thousand men and women and took place in 2005 and 2006.  The study appears in the latest "American Journal of Psychiatry."
