Stephen Hawking Advises Humanity Should Leave Earth

Astrophysicist Stephen Hawking is taking a pessimistic view of the human race's survival if it means remaining on Earth.  In an interview with the website Big Think, Hawking says humanity must get off planet Earth, and at a relatively hasty timeframe, if it's to survive in the long-term.  He warns humans may have less than 200 years to develop a way to move off the planet.  He says it'll be difficult enough to avoid disaster in the next hundred years, let alone the next thousand or million.

Spreading out into space is his answer to avoid both man-made catastrophies such as nuclear warfare and cosmic calamities such as an asteroid slamming into Earth, killing large segments of the population.  Previously, Hawking noted on the Discovery Channel that life could also be threatened by an extraterrestrial civilization.  He tells Big Think, that the human race shouldn't have all its eggs in one basket.  He says, "Let's hope we can avoid dropping the basket until we have spread the load."
